xbiz_img05(Hey!  We announced our big new with a joint press release with Rog of RogReviews.com!  Here it is!)

(LOS ANGELES, CA) ” The world’s leading source of adult film information IAFD.com and adult entertainment review and news site www.Rogreviews.com, are proud to once again be the recipient of an XBiz Award nomination. Joining some of the most popular and well-respected sites in adult entertainment in the Best Fan Site category, the sites proudly maintain their long-standing status as industry leaders.

“I am always honored to be included in this category,” says Rogreviews.com owner and head writer Roger Pipe. “I started the site years ago as a fan and have tried to provide other fans with honest reviews and entertaining interviews. To be included as a fan favorite alongside an amazing site like IAFD.com is really the ultimate compliment.

Joining other fan-friendly adult information sites such as AdultDVDTalk and XCritic, IAFD.com and  RogReviews.com are part of a community of sites designed to entertain and inform fans of adult entertainment and to help them better spend their hard earned dollars on quality smut.

“I am really proud to have the IAFD nominated as a favorite fan site,” says webmaster Jeff Vanzetti. “It takes a lot of work to maintain the massive amount of data on our site. A lot of people work very hard to keep our site going and it is always gratifying to see the hard work recognized.”

Live since 1998, RogReviews.com underwent a major overhaul three years ago and has been an XBiz Award nominee ever since.

“I would be remiss if I didn’t mention and thank my web mistress and partner Natalie Dawn. ” Pipe says. “She works incredibly hard to make the site run smoothly and deserves most of the credit. Plus she is way cuter so if I do win, I promise to make her go get the trophy.”

We send our condolences out to April Flores who unexpectedly lost her husband and partner, Carlos Batts, last night.

Carlos Batts, according to a jumble of tweets and status updates from friends, died suddenly last night, found by his wife, muse, and model, April Flores. Born in Baltimore, Batts came to L.A. and slowly but purposefully carved out a niche in “artcore” glamor photography using high-contrast L.A. (in addition to its porn stars) as a backdrop, and joining contemporaries Dave Naz, Ed Fox, and Steve Diet Goedde. Batts was 42.

But it was in April Flores that Batts found his anchor and inspiration. Batts was a relentless promoter of his work, and loved his wife, who was so often the subject of it. I am shocked that this vital young man is gone so soon, and am so proud to know April Flores, a beautiful person.

Back in 2001, CityPaper, the alternative paper in Baltimore, ran a profile/interview of Batts, subtitled Carlos Batts Wants You to Know That He Is Not a Pornographer. So What Is He?

He sums up his origin like this:

I went out there and I showed them this stuff, all my manipulations, all the images . . . I’m styling, I do the body paint. And I happened to have an outtake–before I beat the image up, I had an outtake of one of the girls, a Polaroid test. And the girl was very voluptuous, had long Bettie Page black hair, and [an editor said] said, “Would that girl be interested in working for our new magazine called Leg World?”

I had photographed a lot of people naked, but not in a superficial sense where it was about them being naked, you know what I mean? So even if she was hot, I’m never like, “Oh, yeah, you’re hot.” It was always like, I’m going to paint her green and do something with her. . . .

From the outtake, I asked my model, I said, “Hey would you be interested in doing this, something like a Bettie Page thing for this magazine.” She said, “Oh, yeah, that’d be cool.”

And growing up watching ’70s porn, ’80s porn . . . I’m driven to warm, deep yellow-orange-red colors. And I light everything backwards. I’m working at the lab, [and] Agfa film was the cheapest film. You get a three-pack for like $2.99 plus [an employee] discount. This film was so warm. And I lit it wrong. I used the wrong bulbs. The stuff came out really deep, really moody colors.

And they loved it, because it was almost like Bettie Page, and it was contemporary, but kind of ’70s. It was really warm. I love lighting it that way. And from there, they were like, “Oh, Carlos, shoot some stuff.”

His work was captured in four books, Fat Girl, Crazy Sexy Hollywood, American Gothic and Wild Skin.

He was 40.

Exxxotica Florida 2013

Went to the first Exxxotica Ft. Lauderdale after it had moved from nearby Miami. Did it as a spur of the moment thing only telling my closest colleagues of pending plans. Okay, twittering them is still somewhat public. As for the show, the weekend was overtaken by storms and the dreary weather probably tempered attendance. Yet I didn’t see much difference between attendance compared to when the show was in Miami.

Some observations:

  • I was delighted to see Remy Lecroix and she is the main reason for my spur of the moment decision to go.
  • Her booth, Bangbros, was easily the most popular of the convention. Ron Jeremy was the most popular porn star as people lined up to see him. He looked much frailer than in recent years but that is understandable considering his recent heart issues.
  • Jynx Maze and Veronica Rodriguez looked amazing
  • Had fun with Andy San Dimas and Amy Brooke at their party but these Florida dance clubs have to turn the volume down.
  • Meeting Farrah Abraham of MTV’s Teen Mom was somewhat surreal. When I asked to take her photo, she had to get her manager’s clearance since I was media. Except the manager was not around, so I only got random candid shots of her. Other girls signing around her commented she was standoffish towards them. I’ve never watched either of her MTV shows so I don’t know if that was just her normal personality or she was disgusted by her surroundings.
  • Met a new yet familiar webcam model named Bridgette who was one of the most beautiful girls at the show. At first I thought it was because she looked a cross between Jana Jordan and Franziska Facella, but later on I realised she was a popular glamour model  that my friends have shot.
